We are Alex and Maddie Schnell, husband and wife, parents to our daughter Louie, and the founders of The Field. Our story began with nearly four years of infertility and loss, a season that led us away from searching for answers outside ourselves and toward a more holistic, internal understanding of healing. One that honored the connection between mind, body, spirit, and environment. That journey ultimately brought us the gift of our daughter and fully reshaped how we wanted to live.
OUR STORY.
After five years building a dog training business in San Antonio, we followed a deep calling to eighteen acres in Middle Tennessee, trusting a decision that made little sense on paper but felt undeniably true. Two days after arriving, we found out we were pregnant with our little girl.
The Field grew out of our trust in this sacred land. It’s our home, but also our creative canvas: a place where gardens, gatherings, photography, education, hospitality, and ideas not yet imagined are given room to take shape. Different expressions of one belief:
that beauty is not a luxury, it’s medicine.
Alex finds his deepest joy tending the soil, woodworking, creating beautiful bouquets, and building spaces where others feel seen and supported. Maddie brings a spirit of curiosity to gardening, design, storytelling, gathering, and creating beauty in the everyday. Together, we believe the environments we create shape how people feel, heal, connect, and imagine what might be possible.
We don’t think of ourselves as business owners so much as stewards. Of the land, of our family, and of the ideas that want to grow here. The Field exists to invite people to slow down, reconnect with nature, gather around a table, create with courage, nurture meaningful relationships, and remember that the possibilities for their lives may be far greater than they once imagined.
The Field isn’t meant to become one fixed thing. It is meant to grow, evolve, and respond to what wants to emerge. A place where people, ideas, relationships, and possibilities are given the space to grow.
We hope it becomes a legacy that outlives us, continuing to invite future generations into a life of greater presence, purpose, beauty, and possibility. And we hope everyone who visits leaves believing that something more might be possible for them, too.
